Use these 5 easy strategies to inform your participants.

Every effective learning experience is built on four essential elements — the 4Ns. These elements are simple yet powerful. When executed correctly, participants will leave your sessions feeling informed, engaged, entertained, and inspired.
Throughout this article series, we’ll explore five practical strategies for each element, supported by insights and examples from my over two decades as a Learning & Development professional.
The first N is Inform.
Training is impactful when participants gain tools they can practice applying during the session and learn practical, concrete solutions they can implement following the session.
Strategy #1: Understand who your learners are.
Long before you walk into your training room or open your virtual classroom, it’s worthwhile to do your homework on the learners who will be participating in your session.
Understanding who your learners are has several benefits. First, it enables you to appropriately customize the content and delivery of your message to participants’ level of sophistication and unique needs. Second, knowing who your learners are prepares you to foster a welcoming and supportive space. Third, understanding the background knowledge your participants bring to the session eliminates redundancy and allows you to focus instead on introducing new concepts.

Conduct an audience analysis. Collect your participants’ demographic information, including their roles, experience level, educational background, and geographic location. These details will help you to personalize your delivery method. For example, your delivery approach for an audience of recently hired customer-facing frontline employees will differ in certain respects from your delivery approach for an audience of seasoned D-Suite executives.
Consider your participants’ diversity. Exceptional facilitators cultivate an inclusive and psychologically safe environment where their learners feel valued and free to contribute. Work with your client or stakeholder to obtain a breakdown of your participants’ age, generation, gender identity, abilities, cultural background, and ethnicity. If your training session is scheduled during a time of the year when certain religions traditionally engage in fasting, such as on Yom Kippur or during Ramadan, understand that observers may have limited energy to participate in highly physical activities.
